Homemade Garlic Naan – Soft, Buttery & Irresistible!
Nothing quite like the aroma of freshly made garlic naan straight from the pan—warm, pillowy, and infused with rich, garlicky butter.
However, whether you serve it alongside a creamy curry or white rice, use it as a base for wraps, or simply enjoy it on its own, homemade naan takes your meal to the next level.
While naan is often considered a restaurant-only treat, it’s surprisingly easy to make at home with simple ingredients. You don’t even need a tandoor! In this recipe, I’ll show you how to make soft, chewy garlic naan using a stovetop or oven, plus a few tips for getting that authentic charred flavor.
So, are you ready to transform your kitchen into an Indian restaurant? Let’s get started to show tou how to make Garlic Naan Bread, the best recipe ever!
Ingredients:
For the dough:
- 500g cups all-purpose flour (or bread flour)
- 60g melted butter
- ½ cup warm water
- ¼ cup plain yogurt
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 70g baking yeast
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon instant yeast (or 1½ teaspoons active dry yeast)
- 1 tablespoon oil (vegetable or olive oil)
For the garlic butter topping:
- 2 tablespoons melted butter or ghee
- 2-3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon chopped fresh persille (optional)
Instructions:
Step 1: Prepare the Dough
- Mix warm milk, melted butter, and yeast in a small bowl. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy (skip this step if using instant yeast).
- Combine flour, salt, and sugar in a large mixing bowl.
- Add yogurt, mix, and knead into a soft dough. If it’s sticky, dust it with a little more flour.
- Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for 40-60 minutes until it doubles in size.
Step 2: Shape the Naan
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 6-8 equal portions.
- Roll each portion into a ball and flatten it into an oval or circle, about ¼ inch thick.
Step 3: Cook the Naan
Stovetop Method:
- Heat a cast-iron skillet or non-stick pan over medium-high heat.
- Place a rolled-out naan on the hot skillet. When bubbles form, flip it over.
- Cook for another 1-2 minutes, then press lightly with a spatula for a few more seconds until golden brown.
Oven Method:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C) and place a baking sheet or pizza stone inside.
- Place naan on the hot baking sheet and bake for 2-3 minutes per side until puffed and golden.
Step 4: Add the Garlic Butter
- In a small bowl, mix melted butter and minced garlic.
- Brush the hot naan with the garlic butter mixture. Sprinkle chopped cilantro on top if desired.
Serving Suggestions:
- Serve hot with curry, butter chicken, dal, or enjoy alone!
- You can also stuff it with cheese for a cheesy garlic naan twist and enjoy with your family.
